A little live music. Something sweet on the Ave. A quiet afternoon at Morikami. And a few things that make you say, “Only in the 561.”

That’s the Boca + Delray I wanted to put in this guide.

I’ve brought together local favorites, restaurants, sunset spots, shopping, free things to do and those little details that make living here fun. Save it for the next time someone asks, “What should we do this weekend?” Or send it to the friend who is always visiting and somehow still needs you to plan everything.

First, a little local lingo

“The Ave” means Atlantic Avenue in Delray. “Season” means the calendar fills up and dinner reservations take a little more planning. And “the 561”? An area code and a personality.

If you’re new here, consider this your introduction. If you’ve been here forever, there might still be a few things to add to your weekend.

Something sweet, something casual + a night on the Ave

The food pages mix familiar favorites with small stops worth working into your day. Think Kilwins on the Ave, Hoffman’s Chocolates and Cosa Duci for a little something sweet. Fran’s Chicken Haven gets a spot among the local legends, too.

For a night out, the guide includes Dada, Rocco’s Tacos and Sazio. Pick your dinner plan, leave a little room for dessert and see where the evening goes.

This is a collection to browse by mood. It doesn’t have to become an itinerary with six reservations and a spreadsheet.

Live music, jazz nights + a little disco

Sometimes dinner is the plan. Sometimes dinner is what happens before the plan.

The guide’s music and nightlife page includes The Funky Biscuit, Crazy Uncle Mike’s, Johnnie Brown’s, Arts Garage and Mizner Park Amphitheater. Check the individual calendars before heading out, especially for ticketed performances.

And if your idea of a good night involves a dance floor, Good Night John Boy is in here, too. Think DJs and disco dancing.

The quieter side of Boca + Delray

Morikami offers a quieter change of pace. The guide also includes places to slow down by the water, such as Veterans Park, Silver Palm Park and Lake Ida Park.

Bring a blanket. Put your phone down for a minute. Leave a little space in the day for doing absolutely nothing productive.

For something creative, there’s Artists Alley in Pineapple Grove and The House of Perna. A little art, a little color, a little wandering around.

Free things to do that deserve a spot on your calendar

A good day here doesn’t always need a reservation or a big budget.

  • First Friday Art Walk in Delray: A self-guided evening through participating galleries and studios. Check the current lineup before choosing your route.

  • West Delray Regional Park: Watch the radio-controlled aircraft when pilots are flying. Flights depend on the day and conditions, so treat it as a park outing with a possible bonus.

  • Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum: Free Fun Saturdays are held on the first Saturday of the month. Check the museum’s calendar for that month’s details.

  • Boca Raton Museum of Art: An available Palm Beach County Library Explorer’s Pass can provide free admission. Reserve ahead with an eligible county library card and check the pass’s coverage and conditions.

The guide also includes Gumbo Limbo, Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Daggerwing Nature Center and the Science Explorium at Sugar Sand Park. Nature walks, a little wildlife spotting and something to keep a rainy afternoon interesting. Check current hours, access and any local advisories before you go.

Weekend rituals + game-day plans

A market morning. Brunch on the Ave. Something on the sports calendar to build the weekend around.

Those pages are in the guide, too, with ideas ranging from FAU football to Delray tennis. Check official schedules and current market locations before you head out. The best kind of weekend plan leaves a little room to change your mind.

Only in the 561

Christmas tree glowing with pink lights behind a white fence at night

There’s a whole page for the details that could only belong here: holiday lights with flip-flop weather, iguanas making themselves at home and a library that lends more than books.

Boca Raton Public Library’s Library of Things deserves a look. Check its current collection, card eligibility and borrowing rules before making plans. It is a different program from the county library’s museum passes.

And yes, the guide gives Boca’s pink holiday tree a moment. For a trip specifically to see it, wait for current-season confirmation of the display and dates.

Keep the guide handy

Use it for an easy afternoon, visiting friends, a date night or the weekend when you want to do something different without leaving Boca + Delray.

For dated happenings, also visit my Boca Raton + Delray Beach Events Calendar. The guide gives you ideas to keep; the calendar helps you pick a date.
